Ben Nevis 15: Shiraz Wine x Mizunara Finish
Ben Nevis Distillery, one of Scotland's oldest licenced distilleries, is celebrating its 200 year anniversary this year. It's only right that we finish the year with a Glaschu Spirits Co release, honoring its glory!
Founded in 1825, and sitting at the foot of Britain's tallest mountain, The Ben Nevis distillery has long been celebrated for producing one of the Highlands’ most distinctive spirit styles. Dense, waxy, and full of character. It carries an old-school weight that shines in adventurous cask choices... something independent bottlers and collectors of the distillery know well.
This 15 year old example spent the majority of its life maturing in a Shiraz red wine cask, adding vivid fruit, tannic structure, and a plush, vinous richness to Ben Nevis’ naturally robust profile - before an 8 month finishing period in Mizunara oak, introduced an entirely different layer: incense-like spice, aromatic woods, and an unmistakable Japanese elegance.
The resulting whisky is something quite unique and unusual - exactly what we look for in Glaschu Spirits Co.
It's more like a sherry than a red wine in my opinion... A combination of the Shiraz cask's dark berry, stewed plum, and redcurrant compote influence weaved together with the with soft sandalwood, temple incense, and gentle coconut sweetness from the Mizunara. Then beneath it all, the classic Ben Nevis weight, earthy malt, mineral depth, and a subtle touch of leather. The resulting whisky is a bold, expressive Highland malt, bottled with Glaschu’s signature focus on character and cask-driven complexity.
The artwork showcases the Toyota GT2000, a classic Japanese sports car, cruising through cherry blossoms at the foot of Britain's tallest mountain.
Proudly presenting, the most interesting Ben Nevis you've ever tried. Slainte!
