Burnside 12: Amarone Wine Barrel
A 'teaspooned' malt of two neighbouring Speyside giants, residing at the banks of the river Fiddich. Technically a blend of two single malts, 99.9% was distilled near Balvenie castle, with a teaspoon-full of the Fiddich Valley's finest added in at the end...
Distilled in April 2011, this Burnside spirit spent the first ten (and a bit) years of its life in an ex-bourbon hogshead cask, before being re-racked into a first fill Amarone wine barrel for the last 18 months.
Amarone wine is often referred to as one of the kings of Italian wine. The plush, fruit-forward style is achieved with a traditional and unique winemaking method called appassimento - naturally drying the grapes out before fermentation, concentrating the sugars and turbocharging the flavour. It makes for juicy and complex wines with pronounced cherry and dried-fruit flavours.
Like the best Rioja, Amarone is cask-aged for several years, adding smoky, spicy and herbal notes to its bold character. Now those delicious notes have been transferred to our beautiful Burnside spirit - creating a truly unique whisky.
